So, just to add to the tension, we were a man short with 10 minutes to KO. It had been ill move by the manager to loan out key player Kieran almost proving fatal. It was only down to a quick phone call and the team called upon Alex C - returning to football after 2 months out. But who then, should casually turn up but Freddie. Our knight in shining armour with rolled down sports socks. Looking slightly jaded but a half fit Freddie is as good as many a fully fit man.
Another beautiful morning and two strong teams kicked off. From the start, it was clear that this would be a proper battle. The battle of Farncombe, no less.
It was a game of one post, two crossbars and five noticeable saves. Their goalkeeper was by far their best player and if not for his efforts, it would have been a far easier game, and may have kept Abs' blood pressure within a normal range. The coach was trying to count how many goalkeepers Farncombe had on the pitch at any one time.
First off was Thomas, who struck a bullet that pinged off the crossbar. George, with his usual hard work, then won the ball and fired in a shot that was tipped onto the crossbar again by the keeper. To add insult to injury, their keeper pulled off another audacious save from Aaron. We were looking much the stronger team, however, we just couldn't put the ball in the net.
William was battling up top - chasing down the opposition and getting tackles in. Lucian and Freddie were their normal rock solid at the back. They would keep a fit Haaland at bay with the way they played ! Aaron continued to terrorise them up the left wing - they often needed two players to just slow him down, but even then he would push through.
Arthur then had another shot saved, closely followed up by a shot from Thomas, but still the ball didn't want to reside in the net. Arthur and Aaron continued working together well and causing havoc to the opposition defence. Alex C also close at the back post after a beautiful cross by Lucian, but again the keeper somehow kept it out.
Aaron, with some silky skills and deft footwork, then hit the post with a wonder strike. We were starting to wonder if it was just not going to be our day, but at the end of the third quarter, George turned up in the right place at the right time, and scavenged a dropped corner, putting it in the back of the net. The Fox in the box. Lovely.
And so we just had to endure the last quarter. Arthur and George again had shots saved but the game was nicely managed out by the team, helped admirably by a cameo appearance from Alex - who came on to play Right wing, then Left wing.- each time giving some of the players time to rest.
George and Thomas took turns to run the number 6 spot and keep the ball moving.
On reflection, it was a fantastic game of football. Two teams showing great endeavour and skills but let's face it, it's always nice to beat Farncombe.
Great game boys. Special well done to Aaron who picked up a well deserved MoTM.
