Battle lines were drawn

On a rainy Saturday morning, at Fortress Tillingbourne we took on a strong Horsell side. With talks ongoing about taking over the England manager role, Coach Abs took a moment away and handed over to Coaches Ian and Percy. They had a full squad and from the off, we played some nice football.

Keiron on his typical marauding runs and Freddie with his normal energy bossed the midfield while Lucian and Arthur swept up at the back. William was the first to let fly, hitting the post and then the keeper made a great smothering save from Arthur. The first quarter was all Albury – slick passing had Horsell chasing shadows and it took some great saves to keep it 0-0. The second quarter was more Horsell with Albury very much on the back foot. Then a shot, which Aaron got a hand to, but it crept in.

It was becoming quite the physical battle but the a quick break saw the ball drop to Aaron in the third quarter – one touch to bring it down before smashing it into the roof of the net. Very pretty finish.

It was at this point that tensions were heightened, and after some ugly crowd scenes [names have been removed to protect the innocent], Horsell were gifted a dubious penalty. Initially saved by Lucian off the post, they tucked away the equaliser. The fight back began with Arthur, Thomas and William continuing to push Albury on. Lucien and Max had been holding the defence together allowing teammates to push on. Freddie was again taking on anyone in a Horsell shirt !

Time was running out. It's at these times that men need to dig deep, look inside themselves and find the inner steel to come back from the brink. Thomas brought the tenacity and Max the guile, to find our Fox in the box, who other than George, who neatly slotted the ball in the net with deft left-footed goal. The crowd erupted as George wheeled away, and the game to an end.
A 2-2 draw, built on a rainy Saturday morning, bought out the best of the boys.

Sometimes what you really need is simply the desire to work hard and the results generally follow. The team twice came from behind, stood up the physical challenge and wet conditions! They should be proud. Coach Percy took time before awarding man-of-the-match to Keiran for his runs deep into the heart of Horsell territory.

Remembered as a proper battle on and off the pitch, the boys should be very proud of this one. And on a last note, the author will not be frequenting any Horsell pubs in the near future.
